Harry Potter and the Crazy Christians Who Think He's the Spawn of Satan!

Hey--I'm new here. I thought I'd fit right in here, because lately, I've found that being Catholic, or in general, having any Christian faith, really sucks sometimes when you're around people that make it seem so negative. Lately, I've been becoming a huge fan of the Harry Potter books and movies, and with that, of course, comes with lectures and preaching about how witchcraft is evil, and blah blah blah. I thought this would be a good place to rant about it. I see there's at least one other post here about Harry Potter, so I'm positive I'm not the only one who has been getting angered about it. I've decided to pull out a few quotes I've seen on message boards and websites, and just comments out of my own head, and just rant and rave about them, because it's been driving me nuts for awhile now.

This is kinda long... I apologize in advance. :-T

"Why would normal, good children enjoy a book series that is worshipped by such obnoxious, vulgar children?"

Actually, most of the children I know that read these books are probably the most well behaved children I've seen. And not only that, they read MANY different types of books, and for a lot of them, the Harry Potter series is what made reading fun for them. Because of these books, children aren't constantly sitting in front of a television anymore. Speaking of which, I know a Christian family who lets their children watch all the TV they want and play any video game they want to, just as long as they don't read the Harry Potter books because they're so evil. They are selfish, spoiled little brats, and I've never seen kids have such disrespect for their elders. At least Harry Potter's characters teach you to APPRECIATE your parents!

"If you, reader, approve of Harry Potter and even let your children read that Satanic filth, then you are on the devils side. You either choose God or you choose the devil. Those who accept Harry Potter with all the spells and wizardry are choosing the devil. It is as simple as that!"

If it's YOUR God and Harry Potter I have to choose from, then I'm afraid I'd have to choose Harry Potter. I prefer a young man who believes in treating others right than a God that you describe as cruel and unforgiving (which, of course, is not supposed to be what God was about!).

"{It is a} Satanic lightning bolt. Yes, Harry Potter is part of the devil's plan. The occult may be candy-coated but it is very real and present in Harry Potter. People in the occult like to be associated with occult symbols. The Satanic ligntning bolt is associated with Harry Potter. Next, look {to} as see what Potter is riding. Looks like he is riding a broom (symbol of witchcraft) to me. This is very natural for such an occult wizard as Harry Potter. Also notice the letter 'P' in Potter's name. It too has the Satanic lightning bolt on it. Also look at the white unicorn in the background. This is another symbol of the occult."

Holy shit, you actually believe that lightning bolt is a symbol of the devil??!! Have you even read the books or even watched the movie??!! The scar is there because the curse was meant to kill the baby! And it didn't, so what was left was a scar. The only it would make sense as being a symbol of the devil, then it would mean it's Voldemort's mark on him... and yes, Voldemort is supposed to be the BAD GUY that the readers DON'T like. To a child, Voldemort is the devil, and most kids would say that the devil is bad.

And about the broomstick thing--are you out of your fucking mind??!! It is make believe... I repeat... MAKE BELIEVE! If you think real witches (ie Wiccans or Pagans) actually ride on broomsticks, then I suppose God didn't make you the brightest crayon in the box...

Unicorns evil? In the words of my favorite cartoon squirell Foamy, "Shut your mouth, choke on your food, and DIE!" I don't think God really cares about creatures (beautiful, no doubt) that are MADE UP and NOT REAL.

"Harry also learns
a new vocabulary, including words such as "Azkaban", "Circe", "Draco",
"Erised", "Hermes", and "Slytherin"; all of which are names of real devils or demons.
These are not characters of fiction! How serious is this? By reading these
materials, many millions of young people are learning how to work with demon

Okay, a couple of things first off--Erised is not supposed to be the name of a demon. If you look at it backwards, it is meant to say "desire." The Mirror of Erised is only supposed to be a mirror that shows the deepest desire of the person looking in it--and as Dumbledore has made clear in the book, this is not a mirror that has a very postive effect on people. The whole idea is to rather than focus on the desires you know you can't have, you should go on living your life instead. And the whole Hermes thing... it's only the name of a Greek god... no biggie. I don't think many people consider greek gods to be such a huge threat anymore, as mythology is meant to be just that: MYTH.

As far as the other names go--DAMN RIGHT THEY SHOULD BE EVIL NAMES! These are evil characters. These characters are supposed to be symbols of demons. Makes sense, don't it? It's not teaching kids to work with demon spirts, but rather teaching them that evil is WRONG. The only difference is that it's evil in a FICTIONAL wizarding world. But I think the message that should get across is that treating someone with disrespect and/or harming another is evil. That's God's big lesson right there! Treat others as you'd want to be treated.

"Aside from the fact that it promotes witchcraft Harry's BEHAVIOR during the film and in the books is not model behavior for children. He breaks set rules yet always seems to get out of punishment!! This sets bad examples for children, teaching them that rule breaking is fun and acceptable!"

First off, every time Harry is breaking the rules, he does it because he wants to save others from danger. He wanted to get the Sorcerer's Stone so Voldemort would not come back to power and kill everyone off. He wanted to find the Chamber of Secrets to stop the heir of Slytherin from killing people. He wanted to save Buckbeak and keep his godfather out of prison because he KNEW they were innocent and didn't deserve it. He wanted to start his own club to teach others to fight against the dark arts because he knew danger was coming, and they needed to know how to save their own lives. Every time he's broken the rules, it is because he is concerned with saving the lives of others. Jesus said and did a lot of things that people at the time thought were evil (healing... miracles.. etc)--however, Jesus did that because he wanted to save lives. He cared about people just as Harry Potter cares about the people of his world. HOWEVER... Usually when Harry is caught breaking the rules, he DOES get punished by the school in some shape or form.

So basically, these people need to calm down and realize this stuff is NOT real. The kind of witchcraft they're thinking of is the kind that is used in Wicca and Paganism. Wiccans and Pagans do not use magic wands and broomsticks. Harry Potter is nothing more than another fairy tale added to the list of millions. It's interesting how Christians don't seem to point at classics such as Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Wizard of Oz, and Shrek as evil, even though EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE STORIES INVOLVES USING MAGIC. Yet, these films are in all kinds of Christian homes. Kids love playing pretend--they love to use their imagination. When they're pretending to be a witch, they are only PRETENDING. Kids are very smart. They know the difference between good and evil. They don't need it spoon-fed to them.

Besides, why can't these Christian parents just teach their children that what they read and see on TV is only make-believe and not real, rather than assuming certain kinds of media will teach that principle for them. Just because a child watches a movie about God or reads a children's Bible doesn't mean they're going to grow up to be God-abiding people. At least half of them end up turning AWAY from it because it was forced on them. Something to think about, isn't it?
